SaltraProgram on Work and Health in Central America Phase I (2003 – 2007) Two million workers are injured on the job in Central America each year. That means that one out of six workers suffers a work-related accident severe enough to seek medical attention. This is a problem of epidemic proportions, yet occupational diseases are often unrecognized and unattended, and their socioeconomic consequences are seldom addressed. The Program on Work and Health in Central America will tackle these problems. Building on a long-standing collaboration in occupational safety and health between Swedish and Central American institutions, we propose a long-term action program to promote workers’ safety and health, coupled with sustainable improvements in production efficiency and public health.
